Sometimes a pair of panniers, however capacious, just doesn't seem enough. Bags of compost from the garden centre, making the most of the "buy 2 crates of beer and get 1 free" offer at the supermarket. The endless bags of plaster that you suddenly realise you need now that the wallpaper's been removed. Even if you do manage to balance everything on the top of the rack and stuff the panniers, actually getting on the bike and riding it is a feat in itself. As you wobble along the pavement wondering if you dare look behind you and attempt the road, you can hear the spokes snapping and the axle groan under the weight. You know what? I think it's trailer time.

A trailer can't magically (and against all the laws of physics) reduce the weight of your lugguage, but it can distribute it in such a way as to feel as if your bike is again a ridable machine and not like a mattress balancing on a bottle of wine.

The frame
These take the weight of your luggage and are built to withstand more weight than you can pull. Because the weight of the luggage is off the bike you now only have to concentrate on pulling all those potatoes and plaster not on trying to balance them as well
The universal hitch
All good trailers are linked together so that they can move in all directions. If you wobble or go over potholes or suddenly swerve, the trailer stays upright.
The wheels.
Trailers have their own wheels (yes, really!) and this means that they can follow your bike. There are no gears so the wheels don't have to be dished and they are small. Both of these factors mean that the wheels can be built to withstand a lot of weight

Carry Freedom Y Trailer

These are one of the most versatile bike trailers you can buy! Constructed in the UK around a lightweight box section aluminium frame, a very strong non-slip plywood base (like a skate board surface), and with spoked wheels which can be quick-released in seconds. A simple hitch attaches to the rear axle (either solid spindle or quick-release). Strap on box or bag of your choice onto platform.
