About Bicycle Doctor

We’ve been selling and repairing all kinds of bikes at our shop in Rusholme, South Manchester, for over 35 years this year and have the wide range of knowledge and experience to back this up. We believe that a bike shop should be a pleasure to visit, whatever kind of cyclist you are, or plan to become. Service with a smile and the old-fashioned way of doing things is as important to us as knowing what we are talking about.

We believe that the bicycle isn’t just the most efficient form of transport ever invented, but that it’s also a constant joy, whatever way you choose to ride it, fast or slow, long distance or short, rain or shine. Between us, we have done most of what can be done on a bike; commuting, touring, racing, mountain biking, swanning around and just having fun. As a result, we can help and advise on every aspect of your cycling life.

A Workers Co-operative

Bicycle Doctor is a bit different from bike shops and other businesses you may be used to; we’re proud to be a Workers’ Co-op which means the workers are the bosses and we share the running of the shop. Bicycle Doctor staff are all equal; “same pay, same say.” Certain Co-ops have many branches and a hierarchical system of employment with uneven pay between staff. This contradicts the ethos of a grassroots Co-op like ours, and has no advantage to the workers at the bottom of the pyramid. There’s only one thing that could make it fairer in the shop… if Mo was less kettle-shy!

In the 35 years Bicycle Doctor has been in business, we’ve never felt this way of doing things has left us at a disadvantage. We are a happy bunch, and every one of us really cares about the shop. That’s why when you buy from us you can be sure we’ll do our best to give you excellent service, from choosing the right bike for your needs to sizing it correctly.

Why get a bike from Bicycle Doctor?

We absolutely love bikes and we’re eager to pass on our two-wheeled excitement. From customers looking for their first bike to someone looking for a specialist touring bike to span the world on; we understand the variety of uses people ride bikes for and we’ll be pleased to help you pick, or custom design, a bike that suits your needs perfectly. If all you’re looking for is a massive discount off the RRP …sorry we’re not discount merchants! But take a second and read on to find out why there’s actually much more value in our shop and why our customers get so much more enjoyment from their bikes.

Time
All new bike sales should start with a chat. We can’t advise what’s going to suit your needs without spending a bit of time finding out why it is you’ve come looking for a bike in the first place. We don’t have targets or anything awkward like that, so you won't feel pressured towards making a decision. We take the time to properly size you up and you can try different saddles or stems to make sure you’ll be perfectly comfortable and suited. So come in with enough time to have a few test rides and make a proper decision.

Assembly
We go a lot further assembling bikes than most shops. Time is spent paying proper attention to the things that mean your new bike doesn’t need bringing back after the first ride.  The mechanics among us will adjust the wheel and headset bearings accurately so they don’t wear themselves out, then hand straighten the wheels and tension the spokes. We pre-stretch cables before tuning the brakes and gears to our exacting standards and all nuts and bolts are greased and correctly tightened so they don’t work loose or seize up.

Choice
We only stock decent stuff! We’re proud to have an incredibly diverse range; all kinds of bikes for all kinds of people, and you can have confidence in the selection.  There’s a lot of rubbish out there and we refuse to flog it anyway just because it's got a strong margin. We also know it’s not all about having every single brand under one massive roof. Lots of the big brands are made in the same super-shed in Taiwan, we’ll be honest about this! Many are marketing companies more than anything else. So we’ll only deal with manufacturers that don’t squirm out of a warranty situation, or cut design corners so they can offer the fanciest derailleur for the price. We’ve figured out the worthy ones and have ended dealerships over the years with the ones not worth your time.

Aftersales
There’s loads of it here. Bikes need a bit of looking after and we want to help you do that and continue to enjoy your bike long after you’ve bought it. So we offer three free services on every new bike, which is worth £150 in itself! Without a bit of occasional love, your bike won’t keep that new bike feeling you fell for at first, or even last particularly long into the future so we’re here to help keep the relationship strong!
